Mari Tsumura came to painting later in life after a successful international career as a solo concert violinist. As a child she had to delay her passion for the visual arts due to her musical studies. In recent years she has been able to devote her time and energy to the study of the formal concepts and techniques used by the old masters in the art of fine oil painting. Through her studies she is continuing to find her own unique style and individuality.

Mari was born in Osaka, Japan in 1946 and began the study of the violin at the age of four. By the time she was eleven, she had performed as soloist with orchestra and given many recitals in her native land. 1962, Miss Tsumura won the Special Prize of the Mainichi Competition. She studied with Toshiya Eto until 1965 when she came to the United States. She was first prize winner of the Merriweather Post Contest in Washington and appeared numerous times with the National Symphony. Also she has appeared as guest artist with many leading orchestras under the auspices of the Leventritt Foundation.

As recitalist she has appeared from coast to coast at major universities, museums, and concert  series including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Carnegie Hall.

On radio she has broadcast for WQXR-New York, Bavarian Radio in Munich, Germany and Radio Hilversum in Holland.
